Grad school vs. undergrad

Since I completed my first semester of grad school a few weeks ago, I've had some time to reflect and discuss my experience. The biggest question I get? How is grad school compared to undergrad college. It's a great question, and because I started my graduate program in Public Policy at Georgia Tech just six months after graduating from Georgia Tech with my bachelors degree, it was easy for me to compare the two experiences.

I'm sharing four observations about undergraduate college versus graduate school and four similarities between the two experiences. I hope this will help those of you interested in pursuing another degree. I know I did not know what to expect before starting my program, and there are definitely some things I wish I knew going into grad school. Yet, I'm pleased with my performance during my first semester, and ready to keep going until I earn my degree!

The differences and similarities between undergrad and grad school

Undergraduate college experience

People skip classes and still get by ok | If you're in college, you know that people skip class sometimes (or all the time) and somehow still manage to pass the class. I think this happens because professors provide so much information outside of the physical class space that students don't see a need in coming to class. However, in grad school, skipping a class can throw off your entire semester. My classes were either once or twice a week and "getting notes from someone else" does not apply to grad school. Professors will sometimes share important information or opportunities to those in attendance only. And, attendance and participation were grades in all of my grad school classes.

You don't always  have to do the reading to appear prepared for class | College is where people discover spark notes, wikipedia summaries, and any other tool to prevent reading the actual material before class, right? That does not work in grad school. However, skimming the reading is a great and encouraged solution for the hundreds of pages of assigned reading that is given in grad school. I had to quickly learn how to skim the reading, read a summary, take notes, do some background research on the reading, and understand how the reading applies to the course (before coming to class). Reading definitely takes more time in grad school, but it's a necessary part of the experience.

School spirit/campus life is important | It's common for undergrads to be involved in some aspect of campus life during their college experience. And, many undergrads have school spirit for their college. Yet, graduate students have already gone through this and may have an allegiance to their undergrad college, therefore not participating much in the campus life of their new school. And many times, grad students are not eager to get involved or show school spirit because they are too busy with classwork.

Class size can be in the hundreds or under 20 | In college, I had a few courses with more than 100 students and I just did not do well in that learning environment. My major courses were way smaller and intimate. However, all of my graduate courses were relatively small and intimate. I got to know all of my professors and most of my social classmates. The smaller courses and more personal relationships definitely helped me to learn more about my field from others.

Graduate school experience

Age difference | While most students in college are 17-23 years old, the people in my program ranged in ages 21-60+, seriously! Read about this older man I had a class with who truly inspired me. I thought the age differences would make classes awkward, but it's really no big deal. Regardless of age, everyone in the program has the same goal of earning their degree and continuing their education. I got to know classmates who were fresh out of college (like me) and classmates who have been married for 10+ years with children. Don't let the age differences of your classmates or professors intimidate you!

No one keeping track of you, holding you accountable | I totally understand and agree with the idea of grad school being a full time job. College did require a lot of time and energy, but there was always an advisor or department checking in on me and my performance every semester. However, in grad school you truly are responsible for yourself and your success. I had to make a quick adjustment and take control of my grad school experience by reaching out to advisors, mentors, professors, and departments to handle academic and financial uncertainties.

Fewer, but tougher assignments | In a few of my courses, I only had 3-5 assignments/grades throughout the semester. Yet, they were very time-consuming assignments that weighed heavy on my grade's outcome. It's important to understand all of the assignments for each of your classes and their value, at the start of the semester. Assignments are often due at the same time, for different courses; which can be stressful if you don't plan ahead.

Less structure and instruction | Similar to the fewer assignments, there is also less structure and instruction in grad school. Professors expect you to know how to write, research, read and comprehend, and apply the knowledge. The class time is not always spent actually teaching and learning, but more so spent reviewing and collaborating with classmates. It's important to meet people in your classes and get to know your professor so that when you have a question or need guidance, you feel comfortable asking for it…because it will not be freely provided to you.

Similarities between undergrad college & grad school experience

Meet people with similar passions | In both undergrad college and grad school, I have met people who have similar passions and career goals as I do and that is always exciting. In college, I did not start meeting these people until I took my major courses, but all of my grad school classes were with students in my program or in another program with a similar focus. Since the people in my program will likely end up working in the same field as I do (government, policy, politics), I know that the connections I make in grad school will be useful later on in my career.

Group work is common | I had group projects every semester in college and I had at least one group assignment (semester-long) in each of my grad school courses this semester. Both experiences include group work because group work is so common in the workforce. While group assignments are not my favorite when the group's dynamics are off or someone in the group slacks off, I have learned how to manage group work and interact with group members to earn an A on the group assignment.

Time management is important | This pretty much continues in every stage of life, I've learned. Read my super popular tips on handling a busy week in college here

Summer internships/work | Summer internships were very common in college. I did not ever do a summer internship, but I either worked or took classes every summer during my undergrad. Internships are great exposure and a great way to connect with a company that you may be interested in working for after college. In grad school, summer internships in your field are highly encouraged and sometimes required for a program's completion. I will be working and interning this summer with a great company that is directly related to my field.

Are you considering going to grad school after college or going back to school for something?

Summer 2014 trips

Happy Mother's Day to all of the moms and acting moms out there! I'm spending the day with my mom and family in South Carolina :) II am finished with classes until August and I'll just be working/interning this summer with some flexibility for vacation time. I have a few definite trips/events planned for summer and a couple that are in the works. The best part about being a student is having summer break, am I right?! Here's my list of planned trips for this summer:

May
Alabama (to visit family members/family weekend trip)

June
Fort Lauderdale, Florida
Savannah, GA

July
Jay-Z and Beyonce Concert (my roommate and I are going to this concert in ATL instead of traveling to Las Vegas as planned)
Washington D.C. (family reunion)
Tampa, Florida

I'm still looking to squeeze in a few more weekend trips!

Where are you traveling to this summer?

Brunch in ATL {Another Broken Egg}

Last weekend, my roommate Alexandria and I had brunch together at one of our new favorite spots, Another Broken Egg. We've only gone to the Vinings location, but they do have other locations in the Atlanta area as well. The weather was glorious, so we sat out on the porch to eat our meal (despite our pollen allergies).

We started with my favorite item on the menu, the biscuit beignets (southern style with powdered sugar and orange marmalade). After visiting New Orleans several times, I have become a beignets fan, and these are the best ones I've had in Atlanta!

Alexandria and I both ordered the cheese grits. These are so delicious, creamy, a little sweet, and CHEESY.

Alexandria ordered a lobster omelet for her meal with a side of the English muffin.

I ordered the black bean sliders (gluten free and vegetarian). I loved this meal! It comes with a small side salad and vinaigrette dressing. And, the slider includes a tasty black bean patty, avocado, tomato, and jicama slaw, served on gluten free bread (that taste like pancakes!)

Brunch is so popular and fun in Atlanta because the options are seemingly endless. Add Another Broken Egg to your list of brunch spots, I love it!

Soon, I'm going to share some of my travel plans for this summer, but I plan on having some fun in Atlanta too! I finally finished my summer bucket list of things I want to do this summer in my city. While I have done a few of them already, I did them years ago and want to experience them again as an adult. Lists are so much fun and a great way to get things done. Weekend recap {grad parties}

What. A. Weekend. I have never done so much driving around the city and event attending in one day, but it was for such a great reason - celebrating my friends graduating! My day started around noon with getting my makeup done by Liz, and then I got dressed for the day. I wore a simple white shift dress from Target, brown wedges from Target, and an heirloom necklace from Forever 21. Perfect outfit for a busy day. I snapped a few photos throughout the day to share, and one from Saturday night when we went out to celebrate many graduates in a shared space. Basically, I was on the go from 1pm on Saturday until 3am on Sunday morning. Such a fun weekend, but I am exhausted!

Lots of creative cakes throughout the day, yum :)
My friend Jade (also GT alum) and I with the new GT grad, Al,
who had his party in Midtown
My friend Brandon, a new GT grad had his party in Buckhead
My friend Shayla (also GT alum) attended some of the grad parties with me
My friend Alison, a new GT grad had her party in Little 5 Points
My friend Hannah, a new GT grad, had her party in Stone Mountain
Hannah is Ethiopian and had a traditional Ethiopian party
So, I got to try some Ethiopian food, and it was so good!

Jade, my friend Briana (new GT grad), and me out on Saturday night

Happy Cinco de Mayo, I will be celebrating with great food/drinks and a great view :)

Eating in ATL {CamiCakes Cupcakes}

I'm spending all of today attending graduation parties for friends, and I can't think of a better way to spend a Saturday :) I'm even getting my makeup done this morning before party hopping! Last week I treated myself to some CamiCakes Cupcakes to celebrate finishing up final exams!

CamiCakes Cupcakes was started by this mom, Andra Hall, and named after her daughter Camille. They have several Atlanta locations, but I went to the Buckhead one that sells cupcakes.

So when I went, I order the Classic Cami (above) and Classic Cami Chocolate on Chocolate (below). I ate them on different days, but both were very tasty - CamiCakes uses fresh ingredients and top their cupcakes with a light buttercream frosting that I cannot get enough of!

Oh, and did I mention they also make ice cream!? CamiCakes recently opened a creamery in the Vinings area, and I will be making a visit this summer!

If you have a sweet tooth, add this place to your list of places to try in ATL, I love it!

May fitness challenge {dancer's legs workout}

Photo via Pinterest

It's May! And that means:
warmer weather
I'm finished with the semester
graduation festivities for my friends
summer break
and…a new fitness challenge!

I've learned that I have to mix up my fitness in order to stay interested. And, I really enjoy fitness challenges. I loved the April fitness challenge and definitely felt the burn as the workouts got longer. This May fitness challenge via Back on Pointe is perfect for toning the lower body.

I just did this workout and it was a challenge, but felt great afterward (especially the stretching at the end)! Let me know if you decide to join this month's fitness challenge :)

First time being a bridesmaid!

Last week, my childhood best friend, Jasmine, called me and asked me to be a bridesmaid in her wedding this summer!

Photo of us in elementary school.
I hope we can remake this photo at her wedding :)
I was honored and so excited that Jasmine asked me because I love her. But I was also really thrilled because this will be my first time being a bridesmaid! My classmates are definitely starting to get engaged (and some even having babies!), but Jasmine is my first close friend to get engaged. I'm very excited for her and her future hubby because they're a beautiful couple.

So today I took a break from final exams craziness and went to the store to try on my bridesmaid dress. I love the dress, especially how it's floor length and has a mesh top.

The color Jasmine picked for us is called Regency (above), but since the store didn't have it I will have to wait a few weeks to get the actual dress I'll wear at her wedding. I am so ready for all of the festivities and the actual wedding, can't wait to share those special moments with Jasmine and her family!

If you've been a bridesmaid or groomsman in a wedding before, please share any advice you have!

Atlanta Falcons 2014-2015 schedule

I am a huge Atlanta Falcons football fan. Despite the recent heartbreaking seasons, I have loved this team my entire life and I get so excited when the schedule is released for the upcoming season. I'm hoping to attend a few games, but really looking forward to the Pittsburgh game. My boyfriend is a Steelers fan... I hope we can attend that game together (and watch his team lose) haha! See the full schedule below:

Goodbye black hair!

I told you how I was challenging myself to 6 months of no heat on my hair. Things were going really well. I'd mastered styles that work on my hair and created a consistent routine. But honestly, I was just so bored/over the color of my hair. Another item on my list of to-do's for year 23 was adding some color to my hair. I haven't done this in years because I've been waiting for my natural hair to be healthy enough and longer. So, I ended my no heat challenge and got my hair colored yesterday by my stylist, Tehira Fitzpatrick, at Too Groovy Salon in Atlanta!

I. Love. It.

Here's a before photo for your reference

My new color turned out as an obre of sorts because it's dark in the front, a red/auburn toward the middle, and gets lighter in the back and at the tips (a blondish color). Since I went to my stylist with some color rinse in my hair already, my hair reacted differently all over. Thankfully it reacted in an organized way!

Change is definitely scary, and we had no idea exactly how my hair would turn out. But I had faith it would be just the change I was looking for, and it was! I will be revisiting my no heat challenge (for at least 3 months) this summer! Thank you, Tehira!

When you visit Too Groovy Salon, tell them Vett Vandiver sent you, and receive $10 off your first service! :)

Quick salads

TGIF! This was my last week of classes, and although it was insanely busy, it was a great week! What made this busy week easier was prepping meals throughout the week. I had salmon and catfish ready to pair with veggies for every day this week. But my go-to meal for the week = salads.

I'm currently obsessed with kale, so all of my salads this week were kale salads with broccoli slaw and other add-ons. I love salads as snacks and meals because they are quick, healthy, versatile, and so delicious!

In this salad:
Kale
Strawberries
Avocado
Tomatoes
Feta cheese
Broccoli slaw
Raspberry vinaigrette

My roommate had a similar meal plan this week, and made this quick, unique salad. I would have loved to try it, but I'm allergic to nuts!

In this salad:
Kale spinach
Blueberries
Blackberries
Raspberries
Candied almonds (fried in coconut oil with curry cinnamon and honey)
Salmon (sprinkled with black pepper, cayenne, garlic powder, dried onion)
Salad dressing (freshly squeezed orange, olive oil, apple cider vinegar)

Have a great weekend! I'm making a big change today, can't wait to share :)

Spread Positivity {giveaway}

Photo via Pinterest

I've been wanting to do this giveaway for quite sometime now, and I'm excited it's finally happening! Over the past semester, I've met some of the most negative people. I understand being frustrated and sometimes having negative thoughts, but this semester of grad school has shown me just how many people live their lives being negative, thinking negative thoughts, and ultimately having negative outcomes.

When I encounter these people, I let them know the importance of staying positive, despite the situation. A positive mindset and speaking positively (and surrounding yourself with positive people!!) is so important. I've really found this to be true as I work on business ventures and school work.

So, I'm giving away THREE gift cards for three of my favorite places to THREE different people!

Entering is easy:
Follow the steps on the Rafflecopter widget to earn more chances to win, the only mandatory entry is to leave a comment sharing something that you will think positively about -- your friendships, your school work, your marriage, your finances, yourself, your future, etc.

And be sure to share the giveaway with others using #SpreadPositivity

I hope you have a great day, and good luck! :)
