"3 Myths That Could Keep You From Your Dream job"
by guest blogger: Emma
When
looking for a job, especially your dream
job, finding a good fit for you and the company that chooses you is a high
priority. Several years of recession have resulted in discouragement among many
job seekers, and the circulation of myths about job-seeking certainly hasn’t
helped people’s confidence. To start, let’s take a look at some of these
popular myths and learn the truths that can put you on the path to finding, and
landing, your dream job.
Myth #1: The most qualified candidate always gets the job
Truth: Although qualifications matter,
many job seekers sell themselves short by not applying to jobs they would enjoy
for fear that a more qualified individual will overshadow your attempts at
attaining it. The truth is that job skills are only one part of what employers
look for in new employees. A person’s soft skills, like personality, working well
with others and an ability to capture the vision of the company play heavily
into a company’s overall employment decision.
Myth #2: If you’ve been unemployed for
a long time, you should take the first job you are offered
Truth: While today’s job market is
competitive, keep in mind that not every job is for you. You can minimize the
likelihood of being offered a job well below your expected pay grade or skill
level by applying only for jobs that appear to suit your qualifications.
However, sometimes the wrong job will look
like the right one. Accepting a position that does not suit you, or your needs,
can actually set you back professionally,
more so than waiting for a good fit. Naturally, you will want to look for jobs
that play toward your strengths, but when you only meet the minimum
requirements for a position, don’t count yourself out of the running. Taking an
open approach to learning new skills can lead you to a job or industry that you
love, but never would have even considered had you stuck to only your
strengths!
Myth #3: Searching for a job is
difficult and time consuming
Truth: At times in our economy, this has been the truth. Today, however,
companies have come to the understanding that hiring top talent is the best way
to grow their organizations and their profit. As a result, many employers are
making changes in their hiring processes to ensure that they get the best
people into open positions as quickly as possible. Some companies are offering
perks such as telecommuting, flexible benefits, and parking stipends. Other
companies, such as Macy’s and AT&T are saddling up to today’s technology
changes and using platforms like JIBE to allow applicants to quickly upload application materials
on-the-go right from their smartphone.
