What a weekend. The semester is officially over, I went to the Fall 2012 Georgia Tech graduation to watch two of my best friends, and I went to several grad & Christmas parties. SO much fun, but really tiring.

Graduation is a really exciting event and moment in life, but also kind of sad because it symbolizes upcoming major life changes. With friends graduating and completing school, that means they'll no longer be on campus or in any of my classes. They're now in the real world. I realized this weekend that once I graduate, I'll never be in the same centralized location as any of my friends anymore. It frightens me, but excites me more.
I was the editor of my high school's yearbook and on the last page of the book, I included a quotation that I still believe to this day:
"Don't be dismayed at goodbyes. A farewell is necessary before you can meet again. And meeting again, after moments or lifetimes, is certain for those who are friends."
Staying in touch with friends after they graduate is definitely more difficult. It's similar to post-high school graduation. However, once friends graduate from college, they have more resources ($$$) to make visits possible. And, I really believe that if both friends make an effort to keep the friendship great, it will be great :)
I'm grateful for all of the technology that exists for us today. I can't imagine trying to stay in touch 50 years ago...or 100 years ago. Now, we can communicate with someone across the globe almost instantly (thank you, iPhone). But we shouldn't take for granted face to face quality time, it's precious.
Real friends are rare and hard to come by (something my parents taught me before I went to college). I believe that if both friends make an effort in a friendship, it will be fulfilling - despite any obstacles.

ReplyDeletelife after graduation is so different than college that I think it can be tough to stay in contat with friends. Sometimes I think we have to grieve those friendship and let at least pieces of them go. It will never be like college :/
